Just some thoughts...

Pardon me as I go on a stream of consciousness ramble here...

It would appear that overnight, I lost one of my followers.  Don't know why... I can only assume that the rainbow colored scarf was just too much for them... oh well... If they're that touchy they don't need to be hanging around me anyway... I have strange fits of obnoxiousness and the thin skinned don't bear up well.

I've also been thinking about my depression fits.  I've mentioned before that I grew up in a house with an unmedicated bi-polar sibling.  I am probably a little more aware of moods and such than most... a few years ago I had it checked out, and, fortunately, I had a Dr. that didn't immediately start prescribing drugs.  She ran the tests and came back with the conclusion that yes, I was probably a little depressive, but it didn't seem serious enough to resort to pharmacueticals.  This is a good thing, as I've had experience with some of them and I don't always react well to them.  She recommended a healthy diet, and learning what would trigger the depressions and avoiding that if possible or learning to deal with it in a different way.  She even recommended a few books that might help.  And they did.

That's why I avoid holiday parties.  Not neccesarily all of them, in particular  family centered ones where there's likely to be self-centered teenagers with a high sense of the dramatic.  Which, let's face it, is most teenagers.  And no, they probably won't throw a full bipolar fit... but things are likely to happen that will trigger a bad chain reaction in my head.

But, I've done a lot of reading and research on Depression.  And I'm probably a bit of a sucker for any book that claims it will help me deal with it.  Some are excellent.  Some are pure tripe.  I've found the ones that don't neccesarily talk about depression are often much more helpful.  There was a book called "Embracing the Shadow" written by a Jungian psychologist (can't think of the author name at the moment)  that was amazingly helpful.

I think I've also mentioned on the blog that I go to a Non-Denominational Church.  Our members have had backgrounds in about every belief system out there.  And that's good.  We are not a 'blind faith' group.  We don't neccesarily believe everything that a pastor says to us, nor do we follow like sheep off the cliff.  We are expected to think and to discuss.  The only requirement is that we treat each others attitudes with respect.

I am lucky that I have the kind of mind that doesn't dismiss things out of hand.  When given a new idea, I tend to pick it up, turn it over, look at it from all sides... eventually I'll probably put it down and either abandon it or come back when it's needed.  I have consequently learned things that I never would have learned before.  What I've always found interesting though is how different sources, different backgrounds and different beliefs often have so much in common.  It's that universal stuff that I find so fascinating.

For instance... I was given a copy of 'Eat Pray Love' recently.  I had seen the movie, and it was ok... but the book is much better.  It's a deeply spiritual book, in a down to earth and often humorous way... heavy on Buddism.

I was also given a copy of "The Secret."  The best way to describe it is all of those Power of Positive Thinking type books smashed together, mixed up and condensed.

Another member of the church sent me a link to a website about creativity in general.  The web site had a story in it... about a CIA study.  It would appear that the CIA put a bunch of people in chairs and made them watch cartoons and comedians and such while they monitored their physical reactions.  Anyone who has ever been amused knows that it affects you physically... it releases endorphins and all sorts of brain chemicals... nothing too surprising there.  Next, the researchers took a group, and made them hold an ink pen between their teeth.  This forces your cheeks up into an unnatural smile or grin... and according to the monitors... the physiological changes from sitting there with their faces forced into a smile were exactly the same as the people who were highly amused.  (I should note that the site didn't give me any reference to the actual CIA study, so I can't confirm the source.  I hate that about the web.)

Then I remembered in 'Eat Pray Love' that one of her gurus had recommended that she sit and meditate while smiling for about 15 minutes a day, to ensure happiness and health.

And in 'The Secret' they recommended watching comedies and listening to music that made you happy, because happiness attracts more happiness.

I find these areas of common ground in these vastly different contexts fascinating.

I have come to a certain understanding about some things.

People always see what they want to see.  A devoutly religious person will see evidence of the divine in everything.  A committed  athiest will see the lack of the divine in everything.   Most of the population are somewhere  in the middle.

That sort of thing.

I think I'm about done for the day.  I should get on with what needs to be done.  Sorry about the rambling nature of the post... I'm afraid I didn't write in my journal this morning and you got one of my journal entries here... LOL

RANT ALERT!

Just a quick post before I attack the house. This place hasn't been seriously cleaned in longer than I'm willing to admit. But posting for my wonderful blogging friends is a perfectly wonderful excuse to procrastinate a little.
The Blue Girl Rose is blooming in the yard... this is the bush that sombody gave to my mother, and ended up in my front yard. I posted about it before but nothing too important...

Last night, I went to some darned seminar about 'wellness' products... a network marketing thing. A friend of mine is involved in it, and they just wanted to 'share' it with me. I listened to several motivational speakers telling me all about how wonderful everything is... I don't know if you've ever been to these things... but here's the rub...

They stand up there and tell you about the miraculous effect of their products in their lives. Just to let you know, the products include magnets in your shoes, mondo expensive matresses{with magnets included in the stuffing} some machine that makes hexagonal water {?} special air filters, dietary supplements, red-wave lights, and every other silly thing you've ever dreamed of. Then a bunch of people stand up and tell you how all these wonderful products have cured their MS, diabetes, back injuries and general malaise. Then the speakers come back and tell you that they make no medical claims, even though they just did.

Then they tell you how as a GOOD AMERICAN you are almost OBLIGATED to be a successful network marketer... (even though the company itself is based in Japan, it's still evidentlyvery much AMERICAN to spend your money on things made in other countries.) Then they make some amusing plays on words, then they tell you how stress is killing us all, and how they're soooo happy to SHARE (for a price) this OUTSTANDING SUCCESS PROGRAM with you so that you can have lots of money and spend all this time with your children (family values is a big marketing tool for this bunch) etc, and so on and so forth, and would all the Special Guest please stand up so that they can give you an application and a small plastic bracelet, at which point I felt a hand on my back pushing me out of my seat, whereupon I informed someone that if they didn't remove their hand from my back they were going to draw back a bloody stump and we'll see if that magnet in your shoe cures that...

Now, I'm pretty open minded. If my next door neighbor, or my cousin, or someone I actually knew was cured by strapping a magnet to their butt... I might be impressed. But I'm sitting here in this room, invited by someone who is telling me what a wonderful, successful and healthy life they're leading, even though I know for a fact that they've been laid up fighting the flu for the past 4 weeks. And on the other side of me, is some guy I've just met, telling me what a wonderful, successful and healthy life he's had since begining these products, even though not 30 minutes ago he was talking about these awful migraines he's had for the past 2 weeks... (I'm thinking the magnet headband might be giving them to him...) and scattered throughout the room are dozens of people who keep telling everyone how this WELLNESS program has helped them sooooo much, and, quite frankly, they don't look well... I mean, maybe they are well, I certainly don't know. But what's the point of being well if you look like you've got one foot in the grave and the other foot on a banana peel? Quite frankly, given a choice, I wouldn't mind being on deaths door, as long as I looked good.

After all this, I did a truly American thing, and went to a bar to have an alcoholic beverage and a good rant to any poor soul in hearing distance.

And now, I have to clean the house...

I'm a bad bad blogger...

I haven't posted in seemingly forever. But it's not entirely my fault...

1) it's been raining. For over a week now. Seemingly incessantly. Very annoying. I hate taking pictures in the rain.

2) even if I liked taking pics in the rain, my camera seems to be messing up.

3) And I haven't really had anything to say. The rain has drowned out even my ranting ability. Just a big damp blah.

But, I have been reading all of your blogs, so I'm not ignoring anyone.

I'm just here.

Thought I'd let you know I'm still kicking.

howdy.

Well, it's been a trying day.

Screwed up orders, orders that no one was willing to sign for, and the cherry on the cake of the day.... 4 gallons of paint dropped...

And then, when I get home, somebody had been downloading free games of the internet, and they're full of spyware.

And now the pop-up blocker is not working right...

I hate pop-ups.

So I spent a few hours updating everything and running spyware removers and I think everythings back but it was not a good day.

regardless, nothing really to say, just checking in more than anything else.

Oh, and as for the funky mushroom on the previous post... still can't find out what it was, and the wonderful gentleman at http://www.mushroomexpert.com/ couldn't figure out what it was from the pic except that it's probably some sort of bolette... anyway, I'll be adding the link to the right hand side of the screen, as it's an excellent site and a great resource if you're trying to find out what that thing in your yard is...

later folks.

Well, Ike spare us...

Well, Ike spared us... most of the storm passed, or is currently passing just east of Dallas. I live west of Dallas, so we got about an inch of rain and it's been really icky outside, but we did OK. They say that most of Houston has no power... Yikes...

Don't have any pics today. The Stapeliad bud is getting huge... and there are definitely a dozen buds on the thing. Had some furniture that needed to go to the flea market stall... but with the weather that wasn't going to happen. So I took in some vintage jewelry to put in the showcase, and then put everything that wasn't in the showcase on 50% clearance... I want all that stuff gone... there's a big storage room that's full of stuff that needs to be sold.

Not much else to report.

Later...

Howdy folks... not working the rest of this week, as I have a whole list of things that need done, nobody else to do them, and no time to do them other than now. Of course, the fact that the weather my be turning nasty on me today doesn't help, but there we are. It looks like the disturbance caused by Hurricane Gustav will be lighting in to us soon... then there's the other two storms that should be moving into the coast over the next week.

Right now, I'm not even at my own computer. A friend of the family went to the hospital over the holiday weekend for an emergency appendectomy, so I came out last night to visit and ended up spending the night on the couch... will be heading out in a few minutes.

They live out in the country a little... so I spent the morning coffee sitting on the front porch watching the hummingbirds come in for their morning breakfast, then the turkey vultures do a patrol around the area... watching them glide around is really quite fascinating. It's really amazing that such an unattractive bird is capable of such graceful and effortless flight. I understand that a few people down the road were trying to chase them off their property, but the vultures provide a necessary, albeit unattractive, function in the ecosystem. They're really better off left alone.

Will try to check in later...

kitty in a kaleidascope.

Well, I didn't have anything else to do.
The cats name is Phennig, just so you know.

A wonderfully boring day...

howdy! It's been a strange day delivering. Lots to do this morning and absolutely nothing in the afternoon... litterally spent from 12.56 pm to 3:35 pm sitting in a park in Euless TX. Now, Euless is just north of Ft. Worth... actually it's part of the H.E.B area, (that means Hurst, Euless, Bedford) and the southern edge of those three towns edge on Ft.Worth. Now Euless is actually a nice little town, despite the fact that people in Ft. Worth tend to refer to it as Useless.

It was a nice little park, but after about 30 minutes or so, every park gets a little boring when you're by yourself waiting, so I remembered something that my Grandma used to say. "Everything is interesting if you look close enough." So I decided to look closer.

First I noticed the trees... Mixed varieties... some ancient gnarly old mesquite, which I really like...
There's also some very nice native scrub oak, but not terribly old, they don't have the 4 foot wide trunks and twisted branches of the real old timers, some good pecan trees... small nuts on them though so probably wild ones rather than the larger fruited orchard varieties, and a few live oaks scattered around, but these were between 25 and 50 years old, practically adolescent for a live oak.

Of course in the trees, there were more than our fair share of squirels chattering away, more that our fair share of grackles, a few cardinals and even a red capped woodpecker, who let me get fairly close until I tried to lift the camera. Guess he's had enough of the paparazzi... Under the trees, especially the pecans, there were some mushrooms, and close inspection shows that there's two different kinds here... Both Amanitas and both poisonous... the smooth one...

and the furry one (which hasn't opened all the way yet...)

So, anyway, I kept walking around and noticing things... It's really amazing what's all around you all the time, but you don't see because you just don't look. Now, the lawn of the park itself is really about one of my favorite kind of lawns around... It's part bermuda grass, mixed with St. Augustine grass, mixed with weeds. I like weeds. They're interesting. I know, it's absolutely un-American, but the sight of a dandylion in my yard doesn't give me fits. So, there I am, and there was a plastic shopping bag blowing by, so I picked it up, then I started picking up little pieces of litter, which are inevitable in about any park and which I always pick up. Grandma again I guess, but I always feel compelled to make sure that everyplace is a little bit better when I leave then when I got there. I'm not a nut about it, but if more people were like that, imagine how much better the world would be?

Anyway, it's good that I was picking up things, because I found a 4-leaf clover.

Now, I used to be an absolute demon 4-leaf clover hunter. I used to have about 30 of them pressed in the family bible... I used some of them on the matte around a pic of my niece once, and I don't know what happened to the rest, but this is the first one I've found in probably 20 years. The problem is that I'm in Texas... this really isn't clover country. There are a few native varieties, but they're clumpy, rather rank plants, white clover really requires less heat and more winter than we get here... but when I was a kid in the midwest, people used to sow white or pink clover in their yards. The clover would catch nitrogen in the air, feed it into the soil and help keep the lawns nice and green. Of course, now that everybody seems to be trying to grow a golfing green, anything not grass is forbidden, but when I was a kid clover in the lawns made a nice soft and green lawn to run barefoot through... unless the clover was blooming and you stepped on a bee.

I stepped on lots of bees growing up. I stepped on everything growing up, they had a hard time making me wear shoes, or anything much besides shorts for that matter. Mom would always cover all the cuts and scrapes with mecurichrome or iodine... so when I was a kid I looked like some National Geographic illustration of some wild brown-skinned, fuzzy headed native who for some anthropological reason painted his feet purple and red... but I digress...

Now I know that a four leaf clover is really not that remarkable. Any gardener knows that any plant may, for reasons unknown, throw up a wonky leaf. I personally have an opuntia in the yard that threw up a pad with variagated white stripes on one side of the pad. The variagation constricted the growth on that side, and contorted the pad into a strange taco shape. These little genetic glitches happen all the time, to plants, to animals and even to people... they're really not that big a deal... but regardless of the fact that I KNOW it's just a fairly common and harmless mutation, it doesn't change the fact that I found a four leaf clover and it really wasn't that bad a way to spend 2 1/2 hours in the middle of the work day...

And now, this post is entirely too long... so I guess I should let you get on with your life.

UPDATE: The smooth mushroom up there is evidently not an amanita but most likely a Chlorophyllum molybdites, a poisonous relative of the edible parasol mushroom... but I'm not completely certain.

The shaggy mushroom in the lower mushroom pic is an Amanita thiersii. Most sources say it is poisonous, or that the edibility is unknown, but under no circumstances to try it... There is one documented case of poisoning caused by it... evidently it's poison causes kidney failure. It was origionally thought to only exist as a southern mushroom, in Texas and parts of Mexico, but was recently found in Illinois and Lawrence, Kansas. Despite the fact that I found it growing near Pecan trees, it actually doesn't seem to be associated with any tree, and is usually found growing in lawns as solitary specimens or occasionally in rings.

howdy

well, thought I would check in... had a semi-decent day at work. Only one order that was undeliverable, the address being all locked up and empty, so I drove off and then dispatch calls and says, "Oh, all their deliveries are supposed to be two blocks down the road..." of course, nobody told me this. There's no sign that says - all deliveries down the road. The people where I picked it up didn't know this... anyway, it didn't get two blocks down the road. It got taken back to the pick-up... if they want it delivered somewhere, it'll have to happen tomorrow.

Quite frankly, I had three other orders in the truck and do not have time to go hunting down some darned address that nobody knows. Ended up the day with a long run to Midlothian. Drizzling rain all day... not really raining, just occasionally dripping on me.

All this, and I still fealt good when I got home... go figure.

don't really have a thing to say. It's really one of those force myself to post and hope inspiration strikes things.

didn't seem to work...

It's my official 100th post!

I should celebrate! I should have a spectacular pic of somthing totally unique and deep! I should quote a famous philosopher!

I got nothing.

But the 100 post was bothering me, so I decided to just get the darned thing over with...

I've been thinking of changing the name of the blog, but I have no idea what I'd change it too... the thing is that Lucky Penny Flea Market is - or was - the name of the store. I want to set up a page for selling some other stuff, and this name is still valid, but I have no idea what I'll change this too... any ideas?

Totally out of ideas for myself, just tired today.

later.

HEY

well, it's been a productive day in a round a bout way... did manage to get the new heating element installed in the oven, planted some ornamental peppers in the front yard - Black Pearl, great plants but no peppers yet - and managed to find out that I won't be working again tomorrow as that blasted air conditioner still isn't fixed...

Now I'm about out of things to do around here.

That's not good.

I'd have a staycation, except being stuck in the house isn't my idea of one...

Just dropping in to say hey... really.

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

Howdy folks...

So, here we are, sitting at home with absolutely too much to do. Which is just as well, since I will be home all day tomorrow... Truck is at the shop... I got a new AC system last march, and now it's blowing lukewarm... now I am not, under any circumstances, going to drive around Dallas - Ft. Worth in 100+ temperatures for 8+ hours a day without air conditioning...

But I have plenty of stuff to do over the next day... like put the new heating element in the oven... and plant a few plants that I have here... and maybe make a dent in cleaning the house... and I'm sure that by the time I have to go back to work I'll be more than happy to.

later...

another ocotillo update

Well, we've got green! don't look like much though, more like a little weed sprouting than anything else... I guess we'll see what happens.

Happy early 4th of July... I have absolutely no idea what I'll be doing - there are no plans and my sister is pulling a little family stress right now, which I refuse to go into here.

And it's off to work I go... hopefully, I'll have a great day that involves making lots of money, and maybe I'll see something worth photographing...

Hibiscus and Cactus

well, here's two plants that were never meant to be within 500 feet of each other...

The winter hardy hibiscus is one that I rescued... a neighbor had dug it up and was throwing it out because it was "too big." She was evidently uncomfortable with plants that got over a foot tall... whatever. And of course, a little prickly pear that ended up on the lath house after it got repotted.

Nothing really dramatic to talk about. I want to spend the day lying on the couch like a big gelatanous blob... It turns out that the dispatchers at work are fairly impressed with my problem solving abilities, so they are giving me the orders that they think might have issues. GEE THANKS. And of course, these orders have issues... like being written up wrong, being undeliverable, or the only delivery address being "in the middle of the cow pasture 9 miles west of known civilization."

Trust me, the little bit of time I get to spend in the garden is very theraputic. But, today I have to go to the flea market and get some stuff stocked, and I have to see if I can chase down a heating element for this oven. And I have to get some grocery shopping done. And all that stuff that I just don't have time for...

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

did not have a great day yesterday... every delivery was a little bit more troublesome than was absolutely neccesary, and then when I got home it was to the news that the oven had stopped working and we obviously needed a new one.

A quick check tells me that the heating element needs replaced. A quick fix, and while not cheap, it's cheaper than a new oven.

But anyway, I read a book that tells me that some people leave the house worrying and fretting and pretty much determined to have a bad day... and I am going to do the oposite.

I have promised myself that today will be a better day than yesterday...

of course, in aid of this noble pursuit, there may be a few people that have to be eliminated.... but they should have thought of that when they left their house this morning...

I'm kidding of course.

Honest.

what a mess....

Last night I was rather rudely awakened by a brou-ha-ha in the yard....

It would appear that one of the local racoons had decided to pay an unanounced visit, and my cats decided they didn't particularly care for this rather rude interuption to their plans.

This resulted in a lot of hissing, and jumping and bouncing around, and I managed to just catch the racoon running along a garden bench and knocking every pot in his way off... I couldn't do much about it in the middle of the night, but this morning I awoke to cacti scattered all over the patio, and even a couple floating amongst some rather indignant goldfish in the pond. So my plans to go work in the flea market stall are kaput, as I will be cleaning, sweeping and repotting.

99.9 percent of the time, I truly enjoy the occasional visit from opposums, racoons and even the occasional black snake in the yard, but this is a little ludicrous. Wish me luck...

more random thoughts...

Well, nobody seems as impressed with the beer can garden as I was... It's a shame. I was hoping to lead a protest into Ft. Worth City Hall... complete with hippies singing peace chants.

Oh well.

yesterday was a very trying day... One of my brand new tires went flat, and my jack has gone missing, so AAA sent a guy to help me change it, but he didn't have the right tools, so he sent for a guy to tow me, but after 3 miles they had to charge me, so I told him to tow me to the nearest tire store, where they just put the spare on for me, but there were a whole bunch of people ther first, so I had to wait an hour. But he didn't charge me, so that's cool. Then I went to the store that sold me the tire, and they replaced it for free, and I went home and made muffins...

1 large can of mango puree (usually you have to find this at the nearest Indian market, but sometimes the Asian market will carry it.)
2 white cake mixes
a handful of dried cherries, chopped.

If you can find a small 15 ounce can of mango puree, use 1 cake mix, but the small cans are hard to find.

mix all the ingredients, (do NOT add the oil, eggs, etc to the cake mix)
bake in muffin tins, either sprayed with non stick spray or use cupcake papers... at 400 degrees for 22 to 25 minutes. 2 cake mixes will yield 24 muffins, 1 cake mix will yield 12...

because you don't use the oil or eggs, this is low fat and low cal (there are some calories & fat, but you're greatly reducing them) And they taste good...
This is one of my favorite recipes, because you can vary it and get creative... If you can't find mango puree, you can use any pureed fruit, either processed or fresh. You can also use any dried fruit (dates, raisins, cran-raisins) or nuts.

Try a 15 ounce can of pumpkin, and a devils food cake mix... that's good too.

beer can garden...

So I was delivering in a certain area of Ft. Worth and I dropped by to see one of my favorite things... the beer can garden....

This is in one of those neglected neighborhoods, that existed before the warehouses and factories were built around it. Fort Worth actually has a lot of these little neglected neighborhoods. Little houses with a train track through the back yard, or a fish packing plant across the street... One of the big advantages to living in these neighborhoods, is that you can do whatever you want. The city tries to forget they exist... so you're in the middle of the city
and see a small herd of goats, or geraniums planted in an old commode, or a beer can garden...

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I want to do this. And if my neighbor tried it, I would throw a fit on an absolutely lunar level... but it's nice to think that there's room in the world for this sort of thing... I mean, it's a big country, I think there should be room for anything somewhere...

Well, it turns out that this neighborhood is undergoing urban renewal, and nearby is being bulldozed for condos... so the city has made him reduce that up there to this...

The thing is... before it was kind of cool... One string of beer cans hanging from a tree is, undeniably, tacky, but there is a point where 100 of them become folk art... the breeze through the cans made a really relaxing sursuration, and some of them are cut to spin and catch the light.

Now, condensed and belittled, it's gone back to just tacky.

As for the yuppie condos coming in... hey, this guy was here first... isn't there some sort of Grandfather clause?

Anyway, I was just posting random thoughts... probably one of my wierder posts... but I've had a wierd day.

This is Phennig... who has taken it upon himself to guard the garden hose. Pity the fool who tries to steal it. Or roll it up for that matter... I have the scars to prove it... I know he's just trying to play, but he hasn't quite got the art of playing down.
I share my life with two cantacerous black cats. Both are rescued alley cats, and they refuse to spend much time inside. They do, however, manage to keep the yard relatively rodent free, for which I'm grateful.
I had a productive day, at least... did manage to catch up on all the laundry... since it was so sunny and warm out, I hung a lot of it outside. Laundry actually dries quicker outside than it does in the drier here... and of course, I don't have to pay the electric bill. I've become very cheap since gas started going up...
just a quick post. No garden pics today...

same old, same old...

It's been a very trying day... very hot, and very windy... of course, my job demands that I deliver to building sites, so where there's wind and earthmoving equipment, there is a courier who ends up looking and feeling like he's been sand-blasted.

and then, of course, at the end of the day, they give me a delivery to the 41st floor of one of those all glass buildings downtown... and so I walk in, grungy, tired, and utterly dishevelled, and all the suits look at me like I'm a bug.

I so love my job.

But I seriously am looking for another job now... after gas cost, insurance, upkeep and stuff, I'd actually be making more money by working at McDonalds.

That ain't right...

sorry, just a kvetch...
